PACleanSweep: Vote 'NO' on Newman and Nigro
ANNVILLE, PA
[10.04.05] -
PACleanSweep announced its Board of Directors
voted on October 3 to oppose the retention of PA
Supreme Court justices Sandra Schultz Newman and
Russell Nigro at the upcoming November 8 election,
the first opportunity for voters to voice their outrage
over Act 44 and other unconstitutional practices in
Harrisburg at the ballot box.
"By just saying
no on November 8th, voters will send a clear message
to every elected official in state government that
they will be held accountable for their actions, both
in the past and on July 7," said Media Relations Chair
Jerry Kelley.
"The entire Pennsylvania
Supreme Court is as culpable as the legislators in the
pay increase. They benefit from it and some justices
have even publicly endorsed, defended and lobbied
for it," added PACleanSweep Chair Russ
Diamond.
"Justices Newman and Nigro, just
like lawmakers who voted 'no' on Act 44, have failed
to publicly point out the Chief Justice as an offender
of the Constitution when he disclosed his collusion
with the Legislature by calling the pay
raise 'courageous'."
"These two have been
part of a court that for years has ignored the plain
language of the Constitution. Further, the citizens of
Pennsylvania are offended by the outrageous
expenses attributed to these justices recently by a
dutiful news media. It's time for them to
go."
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has
previously sided with the legislature on unvouchered
expenses and ruled to uphold Act 71 - the Governor's
gambling bill - just weeks before the pay raise was
passed in the middle of the night by the
legislature.
PACleanSweep will be
vigorously working to unseat Justices Newman and
Nigro by taking its message to the voters at
community events and encouraging supporters to
vote down the justices' retention on November
8.
"The real problem in Harrisburg goes far
beyond the pay raise," added Diamond. "Elected
officials in all three branches have shown they're
willing to skirt the PA Constitution and conspire to
benefit themselves at the expense of taxpayers. The
Constitution wasn't written to grant citizens rights or
privileges, but to limit the power of elected officials."
