A non-partisan effort to clean house in the PA General Assembly

how to sign a petition...

Sign a petition for a PACleanSweep candidate now!

First and foremost, if someone asks you to sign a petition, make sure it's not for an incumbent. Also, you must be able to vote for the candidate named in the top section of the petition in the primary. In other words, you must be a registered voter in their party and live within the boundaries of their district.

Every Pennsylvanian may only sign one candidate's petition for any legislative seat. You may sign one for your district's seat in the House of Representatives and another for a separate candidate for the Senate, if your Senator is up for re-election in 2006.

Your information must match what is on your voter registration card.

dotting your 'i's and crossing your 't's...

1. Signature of Elector
You're the elector. Your signature must be cursive. The definition of cursive is when at least half the letters touch another letter.

2. Printed Name of Elector
Your name must match the name as shown on your voter registration card and must be printed. Do not use Mr., Mrs., Dr., or any other titles; simply print your legal name.

3. Your House Number
This one's pretty simple. No PO Boxes!

4. Your Street or Road
Another simple one. Please print.

5. Your City, Boro, or Township
This is the one "gotcha" in petitioning. DO NOT use the address used by the post office to deliver mail. Rather, enter the name of the city, borough or municipality where you reside.

For example, there are people who may live in South Annville Township, but who have mailing addresses such as "Lebanon, PA 17042."

The correct entry is South Annville or South Annville Township.

Spell it out. Do not use abbreviations such as PBG, PHL or HBG.

Easy way to remember: No zip codes!

6. The Date
Make sure you print the correct date. If the date above your signature line is incorrect, bring it to the attention of the petition's circulator before you print the date.

Other Notes
Only YOU can fill in your information. The circulator may not fill in anything for you. You may not fill in information for your spouse. Ditto marks are illegal. Use a blue or black pen only.

IMPORTANT: Failure to properly provide all the required information may cause your signature to be stricken or challenged! The incumbents will surely examine these petitions and will be anxious to capitalize on any errors in order to have a PACleanSweep candidate thrown off the ballot.
